An Untamed Path

A Walking Odyssey in Crete. Ancient Gorges. Hidden Trails. The Libyan Sea.

Gorges, ancient paths and quiet coastal villages along the Libyan Sea.

Beyond the Familiar | Southern Crete

Away from Crete’s familiar routes, the island’s southwest coast reveals a different side of Greece. Dramatic gorges, mountain villages, ancient pathways and quiet shores meet the Libyan Sea, where life follows a slower, more natural rhythm.

Based in the small coastal village of Sougia, this five-day walking experience explores a landscape shaped by nature, history and local life. Walk through the shaded Agia Irini Gorge, follow an ancient coastal trail to Lissos and its sanctuary of Asklepios, and discover the remarkable Samaria Gorge, with routes suited to different walking abilities.

Travel by boat between remote coastal settlements, swim in clear waters and enjoy the simplicity of village life. The journey concludes in Chania, with an opportunity to discover Crete’s local wines or visit its Botanical Gardens.

An experience where walking opens the way to quieter places, ancient stories and a deeper connection with the island.

Day 1 - Sougia

Arrival in Crete on the South Coast

Your journey begins with a scenic transfer from Crete’s northern coast towards the quieter southwest of the island. The route takes you through mountain landscapes, traditional villages and countryside, offering a first glimpse of Crete beyond its familiar coastal resorts.

By afternoon, arrive in Sougia, a small seaside village on the Libyan Sea that will be your base for the coming days. With its relaxed atmosphere, waterfront tavernas and surrounding mountains, Sougia is an ideal starting point for exploring this remarkable coastline.

Settle into your accommodation and enjoy time at leisure. Take a walk along the beach, swim in the sea or simply enjoy your first evening in the village.

Day 2 - Agia Irini

Walking Agia Irini Gorge

Today brings your first walk through one of southwest Crete’s most beautiful natural landscapes. Agia Irini Gorge offers a quieter alternative to the island’s better-known Samaria Gorge, with shaded paths, towering rock formations and rich Mediterranean vegetation.

Follow the trail through the gorge, taking time to appreciate the changing scenery and the area’s natural environment. The walk offers a rewarding introduction to Crete’s mountainous interior without the demands of a longer gorge crossing.

After completing the walk, return to Sougia for an afternoon at leisure. Enjoy a swim, explore the village or relax at one of the waterfront cafés.

Day 3 - Ancient Lissos

Ancient Lissos & the Coastal Trail

Set out on foot along the coastal trail west of Sougia, following a route through rocky hillsides and Mediterranean vegetation towards the archaeological site of ancient Lissos.

Once an important healing sanctuary dedicated to Asklepios, the Greek god of medicine, Lissos was a place of pilgrimage in antiquity. Today, its remains offer a fascinating glimpse into the island’s history, with traces of ancient buildings, mosaics and the sanctuary set within a secluded coastal landscape.

There is time to explore the archaeological site and enjoy a swim in the clear waters before returning to Sougia by boat, weather and sea conditions permitting.

The remainder of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace.

Day 4 - Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge Experience

An early Start. Today is dedicated to one of Crete’s most remarkable natural landmarks. Samaria Gorge, within the White Mountains, is known for its dramatic cliffs, narrow passages and spectacular mountain scenery.

Choose between two walking experiences according to your fitness level and preference.

The Full Gorge Crossing

For more experienced walkers, the full route takes you through the gorge from the mountain interior towards the southern coast. This is a demanding but rewarding hike, passing through changing landscapes and the famous narrow passage known as the Iron Gates.

The Shorter Coastal Walk

For those preferring a less demanding day, a shorter route approaches the lower section of the gorge from the sea, allowing you to experience its impressive rock formations and scenery without completing the full crossing.

Both options conclude with a return journey by boat along Crete’s southern coastline, followed by an evening at leisure in Sougia.

Day 5 - Chania

From Untamed Paths to Venetian Streets

Leaving the wild and rugged landscapes of Crete’s southern coast behind, the journey turns towards Chania, with a choice to experience and reveal another side of the island.

Choose between a boutique Cretan winery experience, featuring a guided wine tasting and lunch among the vineyards, or a visit to Crete’s Botanical Gardens, where you can explore Mediterranean plants, aromatic herbs and the island’s natural diversity.

Continue to Chania, where the Venetian harbour, narrow streets and waterfront cafés offer a fitting conclusion to five days of discovery.
